Sometimes the right book or voice in your ear at the right moment can put words to something you've never been able to explain, or make you feel a little less alone in the middle of it. Below are some of the reads and listens that people return to again and again for healing, understanding difficult relationships, gentler parenting, and simply feeling more like themselves. You don't have to get through all of it. Start with one.
Healing, trauma & PTSD
For understanding why the past still shows up in your body and mind, and how recovery actually works.
The book so many people name as life-changing. It explains, in human language, how trauma lives in the body and nervous system, and the real paths out, from therapy to movement to breath. Best read slowly.
A warm, readable conversation that gently shifts the question from "what's wrong with me?" to "what happened to me?" A kind first step into understanding trauma.
Especially for anyone carrying childhood or long-term trauma. Practical, compassionate tools for flashbacks, the inner critic, and finally feeling safe in yourself.
For when pain feels older than your own life. Looks at how family patterns and inherited trauma get passed down, and how to set them down.
A foundational book on healing trauma through the body, gentle, somatic, and reassuring that your responses were never "weakness", they were survival.
A tender guide to stop white-knuckling through life and meet yourself with more gentleness, grounded in trauma and attachment science.
Narcissism & toxic relationships
For naming what happened, understanding the patterns, and recovering your sense of reality.
Clear, validating and practical, helps you recognise narcissistic relationships and protect yourself, from one of the most trusted voices on the subject.
A classic on the minds of controlling and abusive men. Eye-opening if you've spent years wondering whether it was all in your head. It wasn't.
Written by someone who's been there. Gentle, recognisable, and reassuring as you recover from an emotionally abusive or narcissistic relationship.
Maps recovery from psychological abuse in clear stages, helpful when the wounds are invisible and hard to explain to others.
Part education, part empowerment, for understanding manipulation tactics and rebuilding your strength after them.
Boundaries & not giving a f*ck
For when you're done shrinking, over-apologising, and carrying everyone else, and ready to take your power back.
The famous one. A blunt, oddly freeing reminder that your energy is limited, so choose carefully what's actually worth caring about.
Funny, practical and permission-giving, a "no f*cks given" method for spending your time and energy on what matters to you.
The gold-standard, kind guide to setting boundaries without guilt, especially if saying "no" has always felt impossible.
A rallying cry to stop being who you were told to be and start trusting yourself. Many women say it cracked something open for them.
Feeling better & uplifting life coaching
For the days you want a hand up, a bit of momentum, and a reminder of what you're capable of.
A pep-talk in book form, irreverent, motivating, and great for shaking off self-doubt and getting moving again.
On letting go of "who I'm supposed to be" and embracing who you are. Warm, wise, and quietly powerful on worthiness and shame.
About self-sabotage and how to get out of your own way. Short, deep, and the kind of book you underline on every page.
Gentle, uplifting self-love and mindset, perfect for dipping in and out of when you need a lift.
Not a "trauma" book, but brilliant for rebuilding a steady life in tiny, doable steps when everything feels overwhelming.
A therapist's funny, moving memoir that makes therapy feel human and hopeful. Lovely if you're nervous about reaching out for help.
Hormones, cycles & perimenopause
For understanding your own cycle, PMS and PMDD, and the years before menopause that nobody warns you about.
The one people recommend most. Explains what each hormone does across your cycle and how to work with the phases instead of fighting them. Readable, funny, and quietly transformative.
A naturopathic doctor’s practical guide to periods, PMS, irregular cycles and PCOS. Detailed and empowering, though some suggestions go beyond standard NHS advice, so read it alongside your GP rather than instead.
The perimenopause and menopause companion to the above, aimed at your forties and beyond. Good on the mood and sleep side, which is often the part that hits first.
Short, clear, NHS-GP written, and the best starting point if you want an evidence-based picture of HRT and your options without wading through forums.
A broader look at how cortisol, thyroid and sex hormones interact. Useful for joining the dots when your symptoms cross several categories.
Endometriosis & adenomyosis
For the pain that keeps getting normalised, and for feeling less alone in the years it takes to be believed.
Written by a gynaecological surgeon and a pelvic floor physiotherapist. The most practical book on the list: pain, physio, gut symptoms, and how to actually assemble a care team.
Gentle, warm and written by someone living with it. Less clinical, more “how do I get through the week”, with tools for flares, food and burnout.
A specialist surgeon explaining what endometriosis is, how it is properly diagnosed, and why excision surgery matters. Good for arming yourself before a consultation.
Focused on the inflammatory and nutritional side of living with endo. Worth reading for the day-to-day strategies, alongside, not instead of, medical treatment.
A long-standing UK title on the diet and nutrition angle. Dense, but thorough if that is the route you want to explore.
PCOS
For understanding the insulin link, treating the symptoms you actually mind, and stopping the cycle of being told only to lose weight.
Thorough, well-referenced and covers the different PCOS types, including the insulin-resistant picture that so often goes unexplained. A good first serious read.
Practical, food-first and refreshingly non-restrictive, with meal ideas built around steadying blood sugar rather than cutting things out.
Clear on the hormonal mechanics and the long-term health side, written by a gynaecologist. Some recommendations are US-oriented, so check specifics with your GP.
Not a PCOS book as such, but one of the clearest explanations of cycles and ovulation anywhere, which makes the PCOS picture much easier to understand.
Thyroid & autoimmune (Hashimoto's)
For the exhaustion, brain fog and low mood that turn out to have a cause, and for getting your treatment properly optimised.
A UK classic, written by a doctor, and widely recommended by patients for explaining thyroid symptoms and treatment in plain English.
The best-known book specifically on Hashimoto’s, by a pharmacist who has it. Strong on the autoimmune picture and on questions to ask; it also recommends extensive supplements and elimination diets that go well beyond NHS guidance, so take the education and discuss the interventions with your GP.
The structured, practical follow-up to the above. Same caveat applies: useful framework, and not a replacement for levothyroxine.
Accessible on why thyroid symptoms persist and what else to get tested. US-based, functional-medicine leaning, so cross-check recommendations.
Broader than the thyroid, useful if you are dealing with more than one autoimmune condition, which is common.
A note on the health books above. Several are written by practitioners outside the NHS and suggest supplements, testing or elimination diets that go further than UK clinical guidance. They can be genuinely useful for understanding your condition and for knowing what to ask for, but please treat them as reading rather than as a treatment plan, and talk to your GP before changing or stopping any prescribed medication. Plain-English guides to each of these conditions are on the For Women page.

Practical, real scripts for defusing conflict and keeping the door open when communication feels impossible.

Where to find them: Most of these books are available at your local library (free), and as audiobooks if reading feels like too much right now. Podcasts and channels are free on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and YouTube. There's no rush and no reading list to finish, one page, one episode, one small step is enough.
If a book or episode brings up a lot, that's a sign you're touching something real, not that you're doing it wrong. Please be gentle, take breaks, and lean on real support. You'll find guides on this in For Women, and helplines on our Get Support page. You don't have to heal alone.
A gentle note before you start. These are personal recommendations, not professional prescriptions, and No Safety Net, Made My Own isn't paid to list any of them. Take what helps and leave what doesn't. Some of these books and episodes go into trauma, abuse and grief, so go slowly, and only open them when you feel steady enough. A book is a wonderful companion, but it isn't a replacement for a therapist or your GP. If something stirs up more than you can hold, please reach out to the services on our Get Support page.
